Living With Peace
"15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are all called to live in peace. And always be thankful. 16 Let the words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use his words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father.”
~ Colossians 3:15-17 ~
In this life, we are surrounded by things that can steal our peace. Watching the news for more than 30 seconds is enough to make blood pressures go up. Other worries include money, child-rearing techniques, watching our culture disintegrate before our eyes, terrorism, natural disasters, and a growing gap between family and friends. Some days it feels like peace is a long way off, and quite unattainable.
Spend a couple of minutes and think back about how you spent the last 7 days of your life. How much television did you watch? How much time did you spend on Facebook? How many levels did you win on your favorite current game? How many books did you read? How many minutes did you spend in prayer? How many chapters of the Bible did you read?
Too many times, our lack of peace comes from choices we make daily. We allow the world to come in and take what is rightfully ours. We end up living in anger, bitterness, or fear.
However, we are called to live in peace. And scripture is very clear on how we can go about this. Verse 16 of today’s passage tells us to “Let the words of Christ…live in your hearts”. The absolute easiest way to let Christ’s words live in our hearts, is to completely saturate our lives with Christ’s words. Reading your Bible daily is a great start - but we can do so much more. We can listen to worship music regularly. We can memorize verses. We can attend regular church services on Sundays, and small groups throughout the week.
When we are surrounded by the world, it’s easy to let the world dictate our emotions and feelings. So let’s be wise and surround ourselves with the things of God, and in doing so allow peace to rule in our hearts.
Question To Consider - What can you change this week to move away from the world and towards Christ?
Prayer - Dear God, please open my eyes to the ways in which I can invite you to be more of a presence in my daily life. Come and rule my heart, so that I may live in peace.
Weekly Memory Verse: Psalm 118:5 NLT - In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and set me free.
