Surrender It To Jesus
Matthew 16:24-26 ESV
“Then Jesus said to the disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life. And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?”’
~ Matthew 16:24-26 ESV ~
Name the top three things you value in life. Now, spend just a few moments and really think about those three things - which one tops your list? Was it money, career, or prestige? What about good health, family, or friends? Or maybe you thought along the lines of church, God, and religion.
Now, spend just a few more minutes thinking about where your soul falls on your list of things you value. Did it make the top three? What if you had listed your top five or even top ten - would it have made the list then? For far too many of us, me included, we overlook the value of our own souls. For me personally, I take it for granted. My life gets busy and I find myself giving all my effort to making a living wage, and then spending that living wage with my family and friends.
Did you know that the Bible teaches us that there is nothing more important than your soul. Let me repeat that - there is NOTHING more important than your soul. Matthew 16:26 reads “And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process? Is anything worth more than your soul?” The answer? Nothing - no amount of money, no amount of fame or prestige, no amount of time spent in the office providing a living for your loved ones, no amount of time spent with your family and friends. There is literally nothing more important than your soul.
So if our soul is so very important - and it is - then how do we go about not losing it? The answer is simple - we surrender it to Jesus. I can hear you laughing - I said it was simple, not easy. We give up our life and we follow Jesus. Verse 25 of the same chapter reads this way, “If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find true life.” Notice the emphasis that jumps out at me - if you try to keep your life for yourself - YOU WILL LOSE IT! True life begins when we willingly follow Jesus.
And just how does one follow Jesus? Well, I’m glad you asked. Let’s look at verse 24 of the same chapter, “Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.’”
You see, it’s a choice we make. We can choose to live for ourselves, losing our soul in the end. Or we can choose to live our lives for Jesus. We will be getting into the nitty gritty of this later in this devotional series. But today, I want you to focus on your mindset. I want you to really sit down after reading this and consider the choice placed before you.
Question to Consider - Are you really ready to lose your soul for the life you are currently living? Or are you ready to make a change and surrender your life to Him?
Prayer - Dear Father, thank you so much for loving me enough to offer me a choice. I want to wake up each day willing and ready to put aside my selfish ambitions and live the day for You.
Weekly Memory Verse: Psalm 118:5 NLT - In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and set me free.
